Comedy or Satire

I've just bought the dvd, I first saw this movie many years ago. Having now watched it again, I'm not sure how it can be classified wholly as ' comedy'.

Whilst, it is funny, very funny in parts, in other's it is not so funny. Such as Custer's attack on the *beep* River, I didn't really find anything amusing about those scenes.

I like to think of the movie as a satirical movie, and in many ways it highlights the baseness of human nature, and on occasions, it highlights times when people can rise above this baseness.

I think, whilst Custer is clearly a clown at times, his arrogance and pompous attitude is quite indictive of people in power. My general feeling is that this is an excellent movie which shows clearly the flaws in human nature, and the stupidity and cruelty endemic to mankind.

Hear, hear! I agree entirely; this classic film, saturated with satire, inundated with irony, & trounced with tragedy is unquestionably a ‘satirical comedy/drama’, or simply a ‘satire’ if you prefer - and should be so categorized...as long as grass grows and wind blows.
Incidentally, if one is to be politically-correct (in the parlance of our time), I believe the preferred nomenclature is not ‘Mankind’, but ‘Humankind’.
One mustn’t run afoul of the P.C.P. {Political Correctness Police}.
