Quite correct. I noticed that bit of historical inaccuracy a while back. However, the movie does depict a story that Jack Crabbe is telling, so perhaps Jack's memory is faulty or maybe he's just one great big liar.

The Indians could have used M4's and mortars to take out the cavalry, who could have been riding on goats, and you'd have been fine with that because "it's just a movie?"

Absolutely. As long as it was entertaining Custer could have turned into a unicorn and shot rainbows out of his backside. Just look at Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. It completely changed history but was very entertaining while doing so.
