Maybe so - nowadays bands take 4 years between albums. Even after splurging over 30 songs during the "White Album" sessions, it was still quite an effort to get so much good material on board for the "Get Back" / "Let It Be" sessions - plus they had a movie to deliver too.
As much as anything else, the Beatles worked harder than anyone else from the 60's and the fact that they produced so much great material, even under time-constraints as demonstrated here, is just further testimony to their stature.
And by the way, as for your Captain Oblivious remark, if you look closely at the movie you'll see Messrs Lennon Harrison and Starr also getting into the music and keeping things going under difficult circumstances.
I grant you that when they did reassemble in mid-1969 after a long break, the result was the classic "Abbey Road" album, but I still wouldn't be without "Let It Be". To paraphrase McCartney, it was the Beatles, "Let It Be", and shut up.
