Powerful & realistic

Some may think this film is boring but 69 year old Melvin Douglas delivers an outstanding performance in this movie. Dorothy Stickney as mom, I love her to death, wish they didn't have her die so soon (in real life she was almost 102 when she passed) Yes, it's tough and below the belt but reflects a likely common happening between elderly parents & grown children.

So glad to see MD praised. I feel the same and wrote in another thread that we didn't really see his range as an actor until late in his life bc he was given so many lightweight roles during his peak years.

People who find this boring are the ones who most need to see it -- "boring" being code for "I can't handle this, bc I live in the sort of emotional prison that Tom lived in." Sad.

Chiming in to agree. I was so glad to see TCM featuring Douglas this month. He really did it all, and did it well.

I agree. MD was amazing in this. I loved him in Hud, but this was quite special.

I believe that the people who find this boring haven't had to deal with the inner turmoil of dealing with an aging parent, especially if the relationship has always been a bit shaky most of your life.

I am in my 60s. I just watched this movie for the second time this morning. I found it powerful and it's one of the best movies I've watched in a long time.
The first time I saw it was when I was in my mid 20s. All I can remember, up until viewing it again this morning is that it was a sad movie.
Time and life can change one's perspective. I do not find this movie to be boring.

Agreed. While I certainly found it quite moving in my youth, it didn't have the deeply visceral impact that it does now, when I'm in my mid-60s. Having watched my own father die, this film strikes right to my heart now.

I agree. A good performance from Melvin Douglas. It was his film.
