ben gazzara and jenny runacre
are awesome in this film. the best performances i think. don't get me wrong, cassavetes and falk are great too but they stole it for me. i think elaine may's "mikey and nicky" is peter and jon's best as far as acting goes, to me. runacre has had an interesting little career, not a lot of work but done everything from cheap horror films to work with some great filmmakers, other then cassavetes, she's worked with nicolas roeg, john huston, derek jarman, pier paolo pasolini among others. she's maybe most famous for jarman's second film "jubilee". she's great especially in the morning after bar scene, the best of the few important female roles in the film.
i think this film maybe gazzara's best performance. "the killing of a chinese bookie" is the hipper film of his and he's also great in solonz' "happiness" and gallo's "buffallo '66" but i think this is the "meatiest" role he's got as far as i've seen. really interesting face.
