Saw THE CONFORMIST At The Nuart.
I just returned from the Saturday 7pm show at the Nuart and I see plenty of indications that it WILL be coming to DVD.
I've seen this film three times during the last couple of years when it played at the New Beverly and the print they screened was the 1994 edition that, though scratchy at the beginning, did improve as the film went on. But it was kind of a dark print (now mind you, this was pre-improvement era N.B.).
The print I saw tonight was a vast improvement over the 1994 edition. It still had its scartch flaws, but the image was a lot crisper, brighter and detailed.
But here are clinchers as to what may have that DVD possibility around the corner:
1) The current Paramount logo is now at the top of the film (i.e. the flying stars and current icy mountain) where, in previous viewings it was absent).
2) A new subtitle translation which is quite good (i.e. you won't see "Alberi!" as a subtitle anymore) and crisper than previous.
So, it does look like Paramount IS taking the restoration to heart. Still, it's pretty early in the game and they still have a lot more work to do (i.e. it's a fine job so far, but it's not flawless).
In any case, you'll still be rewarded with one of the finest and most original cinematic experiences ever made. And it's over 35 years old. How can you beat that??
