Mobius Home Video Forum (MHVF.NET) member Brian Burke e-mailed head of PR at Paramount Home Entertainment, Brenda Ciccone, about the news circulating on the internet at Home Theatre Forum and MHVF.NET that THE CONFORMIST would be released at 4:3 ratio. Here's the official response:

Hi Brian.

I did some digging in to this issue and have confirmed that the information is inaccurate. Paramount will be releasing The Conformist in its original aspect ratio. We're still in the early stages of the transfer so I don't have a street date confirmed or anything but we want to make sure this film is done right equally as much as all the fans do.

I'd appreciate if you could share this correction with the members of your forums.

Best.
Brenda

This is encouraging news, especially since only a couple of weeks ago, Paramount was saying that THE CONFORMIST wasn't even on their production schedule.

I'm thinking about going to Houston (100 miles from here) to see it playing. It starts November 18, and I am a new fan of Bertolucci, started because I happend to see the Dreamers on HBO.

Drive that 100 miles! Caught the limited engagement version in Austin yesterday (11/17/05). Even after many viewings of my treasured vhs I saw and hear things in this theatre screening that added so much to the total experience of this film. Besides 100 miles isn't such "a fur piece" by Texas driving standards. It starts out a bit scratchy but that disappears before the credits are over. The rest is awesome!

So did you drive that 100 miles? Hope you did! If not, do you have any relatives around Los Angeles that you might be visiting? Because it'll be playing at the Nuart (in West LA) this Friday (November 25th) through December 1st (Thursday). Hopefully this major Landmark limited engagement will open the floodgates of demand for the DVD. You can't get a more perfect film than this these days.

I'll be there for Viewing #4 at 7pm, Saturday!

Does anybody have any information as to where I can find a schedule for future showings. I know it played at the Film Forum in NYC in Oct., I was hoping it would make it's way to D.C., but I can't seem to find a schedule for it. Thanks in advance.

I will be at the NuArt on Thursday!! I just found out about this, but luckily I will be at the last 7:00 (maybe even stay twice). It's a brand new 35mm print! Wow...Anybody else going? We can meet up and talk about the film over a cup of coffee afterwards.

I wonder what's going on with the DVD? If they have a newly restored print, maybe that means they're getting close to a full restoration and transfer. I've only seen this movie once, but I feel like it's been ingrained into my subconscious forever. One of the truly best films of all time, a film all filmmakers should study.

Yes but those of us in Australia thanks but no thanks Paramount - has anyone heard about a DVD release??

reply

I would rather let it be released on Criterion but I guess something is better than nothing

When the clock reads 21:13. All work will stop and the ground will relieve

Paramount does an amazing job I think. The Godfather DVDs, Apocalypse Now, Once Upon a Time in the West, all really great transfers, especially 'West. That film is almost 40 years old and I still have yet to see a better transfer on a DVD.

That's great news though you can't beat the Criterion collection. They truly respect fine cinema. Still, at this stage I wouldn't mind if Diamond Entertainment(Known for terrible transfers) released it. I've been waiting for almost five years.
