TCM airing 9/1/06

It will air on TCM 9/1/06 at 2:00am PDT (presumably late on 8/31 on the East Coast).

I wonder if it will be dubbed or subtitled, because when I watched it on TCM, it was dubbed.

reply

The print that aired in January was subtitled. Unfortunately, it was also missing the "dance of the blind" scene.

Thanks!

subtitled. i recorded it.

reply

was "the dance of the blind" included?

reply

Unfortunately, TCM again did not air the restored version (it's missing about 5 mins--the so-called the dance of the blind scene). For the life of me I cannot understand why TCM cannot get hold of the longer version.

reply

is it hard to find? is the longer version on tape?

reply

There's a black-market DVD taken from an Italian laserdisc that features the "Dance of the Blind" sequence. It's somewhat readily available on eBay.

The ancient VHS I have is dubbed in English and missing the "Dance of the Blind" scene. Was happy to see last night's TCM broadcast was broadcast in widescreen again with the original Italian soundtrack and what appear to be newly translated subtitles. Earlier this year they showed the uncut version with the 5-minute "Dance pf the Blind" sequence restored, but it was strangely silent, so maybe the sound element is lost for this sequence. I'm sure they got lots of crazy complaints about airing 5 minutes of silent video. Too bad because it's a beautifully shot sequence and has some really important symbolic imagery expanding on the theme of perception and reality. I'm glad I have terrific recordings of both versions now, thanks to TCM refusing to let the film languish unseen.

reply

UGH! I MISSED RECORDING BOTH TIMES! However, I'm pleased to have caught it both times it aired this year. It is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen.

When I saw Il Conformista at the Brattle last summer, they screened a new subtitled print with the "Dance of the Blind" restored, sound and everything. It's weird that TCM didn't have access to that for this airing...
