Did no one else think this was funny?

I just watched the version that TCM aired Saturday morning and I was struck not only by the intimate story and impressive visuals but by what I perceived to be a consistent thread of dark, surreal humor throughout. I even laughed out loud a couple of times, like during the scene when the protagonist receives his pistol.

But then I came here and didn't see any mention of it. Was I the only one left with this impression? Was it intentional, or a by-product of the bad dubbing?

I agree with you there is a hint of grim comedy.

Pistol scene.
Nuts on table scene.
How the prof. is killed with little pocket knives.
How Anna is killed, blood is so cheesy and the amount on her face doesn't match at the end.
Eating cat's reference, and the whole gay foot touch.
