DVD release

Anybody heard anything new about a DVD release??

reply

Why isn't this film on DVD? It's bizzare. I wonder what the heck Paramount is up to with this?

reply

Paramount is working with Vittorio Stotarro on a good transfer. I emailed the VP of PR and this was the answer she gave me.

reply

This definitely needs to be released on DVD. Has anyone heard anything about it *possibly* being released in the DVD format? This is an utterly exceptional , brilliant film that needs to be made available. I believe it is available in VHS format - which I don't have a problem with - however , I've heard that the dubbing on that version isn't as good as it should be. I first saw "Il Conformista" on the recent TCM airing and I'm so thankful that TCM aired it. I hope this is released on DVD soon.

Look for a release later this year... they're working on the packaging. Too bad it's not Criterion.

reply

Really, du you some kind of link to verify? I have been waiting for this film so long, so if what you are saying is true I am a very happy man

reply

No, no link but I have a reliable source.

reply

Paramount (the studio who owns the rights to the film) put a plug for it in one of the extras on the Aeon Flux disc.

reply

Is that gonna be world wide or just the States?

reply

I was just watching the costume design featurette for Aeon Flux. It was mentioned that the director desired to have the look/feel of the costumes match the perfection she saw in The Conformist. The costume designer responded that it was one of her favorites movies.

In the credits at the end of the featurette, it was stated "Look for The Conformist on DVD soon"!

I'm assuming this will be issued by Paramount, since that was who issued Aeon Flux.

reply

Funny how many directors, cinematographers, set designers etc say that Conformist was a major influence. I just saw the directors commentary on Cat People where Paul Schrader pays homage to Conformist at least twice in the movie. Such a travesty that Paramount have waited so long to release the DVD.

reply

yeah, i got a copy from ebay, its in okay condition, but i'd love to see it restored

reply

In the end of Godfather II, there is a shot of the house, with leaves blowing in the wind. Did anyone notice that this shot is also used in the Conformist. this film really was an artistic masterpiece.

reply

one could find the very similar leaves shot in Miller's crossing as well.

reply

i think the same shot may also be used in Schrader's Mishima

Last Film I Watched:
Manderlay - Lars Von Trier(9/10)

reply

I just saw this a few days ago and think it's a masterpiece. I've heard some of the same things from various DVD news sites about a DVD being planned for 'some time' in 2006... meaning it'll probably come out next year. Kind of like the "Mishima" DVD coming from Criterion. It's just taking a long... long... long... LONG time.

DVD coming from Paramount, December 5, 2006.

reply

Criterion is coming out with Mishima?

about atleast 3 years ago they had Tarkovsky's Ivan's Childhood on their coming soon list

Last Film I Suspended Disbelief To:
Hoop Dreams - Steve James(9/10)

reply

The Conformist on December 5! It's an extended cut - does anyone know the extras?

Gandhi baked is good.

reply

Wait, I didn't know it was coming out December 5th! Wow, if this is real then I'm very pleased!

SIDE NOTE: I know about the "Mishima" DVD because I'm a friend of Paul Schrader's. Criterion has gone to unbelievable lengths to track down the highest-quality film elements and did interviews with the Japanese crew earlier this year. Paul might record a new commentary. Oh, and I don't know when it's coming out, just to be safe I'm guessing around March or April.

reply

since your a friend of Paul's, ask him if he still sleeps with a loaded gun under his pillow

I didn't even know there was an extended cut. I just read on the alternate versions something about a dance scene being cut out, I don't know anything about that. The Conformist and Reds are two films I've been waiting to see on dvd for years.
I had no idea Criterion was working on a release of Mishima, thats great news. I read someone mention Ivans Childhood, they annnouced that about six years ago, what ever happenend to that? And Peppermint Soda? Tales of Hoffmann was announced the same time as Ivan's Childhood, that finnally came out last year.
Now all we need is Paramount to release the European cut of 1900.

The box art for the new Conformist doesn't say anything about it being "extended". It just says it's the "collector's edition." I'm pretty sure it will just be the version that first appeared in the US in 1994, with the dance of the blind scene included.

reply

Will be out on DVD in Dec from Paramount.

Extended edition on DVD December 5th

reply

[deleted]

That link, Stephen, says it't the "extended edition", but it also says it's 108 minutes. The director's cut version, that's been shown in american in art theaters since 1995, is 120 minutes--even the shortest version shown here was 115 min--so I think there's a lot of misinformation out there that will only be resolved once Paramount has the info on their website. The only official info we have is the box art that's leaked out and it says nothing about the film being "extended".

reply

I would have to imagine that the people responsible for getting this released as a Criterion Collection DVD would at least assume that fans would like to see the full version with everything included. It would be a shame to have this come out and have so much cut from it.

reply

It's not going to be a Criterion DVD. It's Paramount. I'm sure it will be the 120 minute version; just don't hold your breath for any new, previously unseen footage.

reply

FARKING HELL! A Mishima DVD from Criterion!
