And the region 1 dvd, what's with the five languages you get to choose to watch it in, and few if any seem like they go with the people's mouths?
The Conformist was originally shot in Italian but the dialogue seems to have been added in post-production, so its out of synch. The English and French dubs look the closest to the actor's mouth movements I've found.
In my post "Non-linear Storytelling" I raised my own problems with the script. Many scenes are shown out of chronological order and for that reason the movie confuses me.

The synching was distracting.
shareFor many years all Italian movies used post sync sound, often to distracting effect. (There is a funny scene about this in Truffaut's Day for Night.) I haven't looked at it recently, but if you watch the DVD with the French soundtrack, it's evident that Trintignant and Sanda (as well as Clementi) were speaking in their native tongue, with their lip movements closely matching the dialogue, and they would've dubbed their own voices in French as well.
