Are they in the film? I didn't see them listed in the credits. I'm currently reading the book and there's a great scene with Clevinger in the book. I also noticed Dunbar isn't listed either, and come to think of it, neither is Chief White Halfoat or Hungry Joe. These are all essential characters. Explain.
My guess is, since nobody responded, you looked at the message board and saw, "Clevinger and Dunbar", and didn't know what I was talking about because they WEREN'T IN THE FILM. However I expected fans of the book to know what I was talking about. If I'm wrong PLEASE RESPOND!
Clevinger, Dunbar, and the Chief were not in the film in at all if memory serves correctly. Hungry Joe is mentioned but has a very insignificant part. Hope that answers your question.
The movie is NOT the book! It keep the book's spirit and the general idea, but doesn't respect very good the action. There are many characters and things missing from the book, and i think no movie could replace the fun of reading the book. Heller is great!
Neither of them are in the film. As well as Clevinger, Appleby is also missed out. The role of Dunbar is partly incorparated into the character of Dobbs (played excellently by Martin Sheen) but Clevinger and Chief are just missed out entirely. I thought this was the film's one big downfall as Dunbar is the most intresting character if you study the book (particuarly towards the end) and is a great compliment to Yossarian.
If I'm not wrong there is one actor that was cast to do one of the (many) missing pilots. It's in the commentary of the DVD that "that guy stayed with us for months, but was left on the floor in the cutting room" - he just appeared for a glimpse when all the boys were sitting in the Rome's cafè and Luciana appeared. I have to dig out the DVD and rewatch it.
