The actor who plays the pilot who crash lands in the sea again and again and is thought lost at sea is the same actor who decades later played the TV exec on Seinfeld who was lost at sea.

Bob Balaban, great character actor.

The DVD commentary mentioned that Bob Balaban was from the family who basically owned Paramount at the time. And the studio was not doing well (it was a turbulent time in the US as culture was being changed a bit more rapidly than usual) so that - I think I have this right - you could have bought Paramount for a few hundred thousand dollars.

reply

Absolutely. I liked him best in "2010 The Year We Make Contact", trying to reason with a computer.

Um, don't forget, he had a major role in a little movie called "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."

reply

all true; however his best role was in the short film: "Tex, the Passive-Aggressive Gunslinger (2000)"

Bob Balaban also owns the movie rights to the British comedy series "Red Dwarf".

Are you talking about ORR?

'Let's eat Grandma!' or, 'Let's eat, Grandma!' Punctuation saves lives. Use it. Save a life.

Jack Riley and Jon Voight also appeared on an episode of Seinfeld. Charles Grodin did not appear on Seinfeld but in one episode Jerry appeared on his show.

Orr. And he made it to Sweden. All those crash-landings were practice

Yeah, Bob Balaban who played the head of NBC on Seinfeld is pretty much Hollywood royalty because of his family ties(his uncle was president of Paramount from the 30s to the 60s; and his family was in business with Sam Katzman and owned a lot of theaters before the break up by the government with studios and theater owners occurred.). And he himself has appeared in multiple great films by directors like Nichols, Speilberg, Robert Altman, and Woody Allen. One of the first films he appeared in was Midnight Cowboy To his credit, he is actually a pretty good actor. Probably what one might call a character actor since he never stars in any of these films but always does supporting roles.

He's even appeared in some documentaries about the history of the film, and can probably be considered an unofficial historian of the Hollywood industry.

We won't say what he and Jon Voight did in Midnight Cowboy.
