where was this filmed?

I watched this movie recently and wasn't around at the time the movie was filmed. The plot of the movie is supposed to take place in the Meditarranean, however, the scenery resmebles a small beach town in Mexico, San Carlos MX to be more precise. Does anyone know where this was filmed?

Thx

The movie was shot in Mexico. You have undoubtedly correctly identified the exact town.

Paul Simon even alludes to this in his lyrics to the S&G song "The Only Living Boy In New York":

Tom*, get your plane right on time
I know your part'll go fine
Fly down to Mexico...

* Simon and Garfunkel originally billed themselves as "Tom and Jerry", with Art as "Tom".

Awesome anecdote, always wondered about that line, from perhaps my favorite of all Simon & Garfunkel tunes...

Right. Well, I have to-- I have to go now, Duane, because I, I'm due back on the planet Earth.

Man, if you were able to pick up the locale from watching the film you have a great eye for detail. Actually, the extras and some of the crew were housed in San Carlos with the stars residing in hotels in Guaymas proper. The set was actually about a half an hour bus ride, west I believe, from San Carlos. The bombing run where the bombs were dropped in the ocean was filmed off the coast of Guaymas. The R&R scenes were done on location in Rome.

Thank you for the bit about the R&R scenes. First time I saw the thread title, all I could think was, why, isn't it obvious it was filmed in Italy?

"I don't deduce, I observe."

I'm preparing to leave for San Carlos, and I plan to visit the site of the filming while I'm there. The runway constructed for the filming is clearly visible via Google Earth about 4 miles northwest of San Carlos (5 miles by road). The runway has two, semicircular taxiways at the north end that I assume were used to allow the large number of B-25s to take off in groups of 4. Photos on the Google Earth site show what's left of some of the buildings that were constructed as well. I'm anxious to visit the site.

I was confused at the beginning of the movie as to where they were. It was such a dessert like northern Africa. Is there really any dessert areas around Italy?

reply

As I recall, the B-25's were lined up two abreast. The sound of all of those planes idling on the runway was unforgettable. When they began to take off it was a thrilling spectacle to behold, one that gave me goose bumps.
