Scared to watch the movie
My favorite book of all time. All time. I read it every year. I don't want it ruined by watching the movie. Will I be dissapointed, angered, pleased?

Well, the movie is different.
It's not done by the book - it's almost impossible, as it's a 600+ pages book with a lot of episodes and too many characters.
About two-thirds of the book's characters were not in the film, and some reduced to bit parts (or reduced to bits, like Hungry Joe).
No Lieutenant Scheisskopf marching around, no Major ...DeCoverley, no Chief White Halfoat, for example.
The entire bureaucratic fight of General Peckem with ex-P.F.C.Wintergreen is omitted - Gen Driddle is played by Orson Wells and it's the only general around.
And most detalied description of fellow pilots or personnel in the base is largely omitted or reduced.
And the end of the movie depart, somehow, from the book's finale.
More in style than in story, to be honest.
Still, the movie has its merit.
It catch the "catchy" mood of the book, and it's an interesting piece of cinema art. Montage, style, and use of the camera need a look, to me.
I liked the book, and I liked the movie.
Additional footage was shot of Hungry Joe as played by an uncredited Seth Allen. Upon meeting Nichols for the first time Allen performed a pratfall which caused Nichols to chuckle, either sincerely or insincerely only Mike knows if he even remembers the incident. Alas, something transpired between the two and Seth was fired. Glimpses of him remain in the film since these scenes are integral but do create a bit of a mystery. And who can forget the scene where Hungry Joe gets chopped in half.
shareHeller himself was an admirer of the film, so I'm not sure why any literary fan of the book, wouldn't wish to see this movie.🐭
