In the final scene of the film, the editing suggests that Taylor detonates the bomb (whether by accident or intentionally has already been debated on these boards). But the hand that presses the lever is clearly an ape's hand, not human. So it must have been Zaius, not Taylor who did it. I've just browsed all of the message boards for this film and nobody seems to have noticed or commented about this before.
It's an ape hand, not a human hand. Look again and pause on the closeup before responding to this. Notice the shape of the thumb in particular. Compare this to the medium shot of Taylor that immediately precedes this - it's not the same hand.
When Heston fell into the underground, he came across the script for this film. He attempted to destroy it, but they locked him up. Once freed, he was finally able to detonate a nuke to this franchise. Yet, like a cockroach, it survived.

That'd be because you're wrong. Taylor had been shot and that's why his hand was covered in blood. You see him falling towards the control panel with his hand outstretched. Also the white sleeve, even when you can't see his face anymore:
It was a dying Taylor...Zaius has no reason to blow himself and the whole world to bits. Taylor thinks it's time for the world to end and Zaius saying "Man is evil, capable of nothing but destruction!" does nothing to dissuade him.
It was Taylor who pressed the button that blew up the world. Fitting end to humanity. Don't you miss the times when Hollywood could create such despair? Now we get endless nostalgia re-runs.
