I wanted to buy the series on dvd...
I heard they butchered the hell out of them. I was wondering could anyone help, please.

shareThere used to be an old thread on this subject, not sure if it's still around but it went into detail about which episodes were cut and what was cut out of them. Look through some of the older posts it might still be here.
"Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go fill my freezer with my own blood"
I created the threads about edits on the DVDs. If it makes things easier, come to my page to find them.
shareThanks.
shareWOW! I would say that they are butchered. Thanks for the knowledge. I hope they clean them up, I'd love to add my collection, this one of the best show ever. How could they do that to a near perfect show?

they are butchered---most of the songs were deleted because they didn't want to pay the copyright fees. I know that the songs were not necessarily integral to the plots, but some scenes with the songs were funny:
1. When Oscar's mother comes to visit and Felix sneaks into the apt when they are out for the night to water his plants, Felix is singing "Peg O' My Heart" when Oscar chokes him. The whole scene was ruined because the song was overdubbed.
2. In the last episode when Felix remarries and the ceiling is leaking, Oscar starts dancing under the leak singing "I'm Singing in the Rain"---the song was cut.
There are many other examples but you get the point
How about "The Exorcists" episode with the eccentric, Dr. Clove (played to perfection by Victor Buono). After Felix and Oscar visit, he retreats to his creepy organ and begins to play "Peg O' My Heart." Priceless!

I'm not so upset about the other songs they cut out....
but cutting out Oscar singing "Singin' In The Rain" at
the end of Felix's wedding in the finale' was just going too far!
Makes you wonder how much the owners of that song were going to
charge them for a tune they'd already used years ago. Greedy jerks!
Love rules & hate's for fools.

I despise editing of shows, and I am a huge fan of THE ODD COUPLE. I know every episode and grew up watching the show when it first aired, and then later on TV syndication...
I also do own all the DVDs. And the reason is, while I would love for them to re-do the DVDs properly, they probably never will and this is far better than nothing. This is a matter of seeing the glass as 'half full' (or in this case, just about totally full). Even though I know these episodes well, when you go through the series from Episode 1 to Episode 114 back to back, it's still hugely entertaining. Some cuts are more painful than others, but what remains is great...
.... and we also get a lot of NEW footage that we were not used to always seeing on syndicated re-runs.
I just think it's silly to deny yourself.
I take the glass half full approach but I refuse to watch the episodes that are seriously compromised like "Strike Up The Band Or Else" because without "Cocktails For Two" that episode is worthless. One of my favorite moments of the series is the look on Felix's face when Pernell Roberts suddenly starts singing "Cocktails For Two".
Fortunately there are enough uncompromised episodes to keep it from being a total loss, but there are some points where one has to say enough. I'm just sorry CBS/Paramount couldn't be shamed into doing it right again like they were with "The Fugitive."
Most of the edits are such that -- had I not known what I was missing -- it wouldn't really affect anything. (Most first-time viewers will still have a great time watching these eps). For me, the most annoying deletion is Oscar dancing at the end of the series and singing "Singin' In The Rain".
shareI agree that it's a shame that CBS/Paramount couldn't be shamed into doing the right thing with this show. But I recommend anyone thinking about getting this show take the plunge because this will likely be as good as it gets. Anyone who likes classic sitcoms will like this show and it's worth owning even with the annoying edits.
shareI watch 'em on TV or YouTube where they are mostly unedited.
shareI recently started watching METV and found The Odd Couple there. I also found Bosom Buddies with Tom hanks and Peter Scolari. I remember watching that show first run and remembered Billy Joel's "My Life" as the show's opening theme song. What happened there? Some other song is in its place now...
shareGlad I came here. I got all seasons of both The Andy Griffith Show and Frasier on DVD and was thinking about getting The Odd Couple on DVD. But if they butchered the heck out of them I might as well save my money.
shareI also bought the DVDs (all five seasons)despite the edits. I think CBS/Paramount not only should issue a new release with the edits restored, but should offer a discount for current owners to trade in their discs for the new releases. that would only be fair, but I'm not holding my breath.
shareThey didn't want to pay Billy Joel for the rights.
shareI broke down and bought the complete series. That's 114 episodes on 20 discs. I got it at BJ's, for $30. That's a buck-and-a-half per disc. Even if it's still butchered, it's still a steal. As someone has already said, a edited OC is better than none at all.
Spenser with an "S", like the poet.
