Another Odd Couple
Any other combination you would have liked to have seen? I’d have loved to see:
George Segal as Oscar
Ron Leibman as Felix

I don't know, I guess I'd like to see Leibman play against type, but then I would be sad to subdue his natural character. I just see him putting in a great turn as Felix. He would indulge a few eccentricities, sure, but it would mostly be a toned down, subtle performance. George Segal could easily play the Oscar type. I know I'm complicating matters, but I think we'd get some interesting results. Either way, they make a great team.
shareArt Carney and Dean Martin were considered for the part of Felix for the TV version. Carney originated the role of Felix in the Broadway play.
Mickey Rooney and Martin Balsam were considered for the part of Oscar for the TV version. Tony Randall wanted Rooney to play Oscar but Garry Marshall insisted on Jack Klugman.
The roles of Oscar and Felix were created on Broadway by Walter Matthau and Art Carney. The roles of Oscar and Felix were recreated for film by Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. They were perfected for TV by Jack Klugman and Tony Randall.
