During week 1 of the 1983 NFL season on ABC's Monday Night Football between the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskin, one local broadcast in Seattle put on an absolute disaster of a presentation. Not only did KOMO, the ABC affiliate, controversially air the game on tape delay, and not only did a weird technical glitch cause viewers in the Seattle/Tacoma area to miss a part of the game, but their incompetence spoiled an incredible comeback and an incredible game to open up the season. And let's just say that people were not too pleased about it. This is the story behind the broadcasting controversy that impacted Monday Night Football in one of the largest TV markets in the USA.share
NOTE: If some clips have weird filters on them that make the image seem blurrier or darker than you might expect, that is because of YouTube. That was the least intrusive filter I could have on those clips without the video getting blocked. Why the video got blocked, even though there are many clips of the exact same game available on YouTube that do not satisfy the four fair use factors as set forth in Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, I have no clue; however, it was either do the video with the filter, or don't do the video at all.
