"Top Of The World, Ma!" - Joe Namath Comment

Bo Svenson is in the office. Dodo Denney is typing as the secretary.

He tells her he's a professional football player.

She says all she hears about football is Joe Namath.

He follows thru with a comment about 'they' fixed his knees (I take this to mean an injury Namath endured and 'they' are the doctors, who made him well.)

She now says, "it wasn't his knees I heard about!"

What was there hen she'd heard about Joe Namath back then? Anybody know? Was he a womanizer?

reply

He was nicknamed "Broadway Joe" and not just because he played for the New York Jets. He was the quintessential pro-ball, playboy of the era. Spent at least as much time in the gossip pages as the sports pages. Also had a bash as an actor, showing up in a few films and tv shows, but was really just a "personality."

And he also appeared on an episode of the Brady Bunch as well as Here's Lucy, but clearly that wasn't what the secretary was talking about.

The actress playing the secretary was Dodo Denney, best known as Mrs. Teevee in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, so she obviously didn't say it in a non-chalant manner. Very judgmental.

Obviously it wasn't about an attempted acting career.

The only 'controversy' I recall about the man was the pantyhose in the commercial, but again, that wouldn't be something she 'heard'.

The "It wasn't his knees I heard about," line I took to be just a double entendre, as it would be another part of his anatomy that was talked about.
