Season 2 is where it started looking like the NBC Mystery Movie, a la Columbo (format and music).

Columbo, McMillan & Wife and the Sunday Mystery Movie didn't exist until McCloud's second season. McCloud was the one that paved the way for the others.

You've probably only seen the mish-mashed episodes where two hour long shows were combined into one 90 minute show. The originals as filmed and originally broadcast were fine.
