Lou and Rhoda

In season 4 Lou and Rhoda start hanging out and really enjoy each other's company and I wonder if this was just intended to be a self-contained episode or if the writers were testing their chemistry about a possible pairing. If VH had not left the following season to start her own show and had stayed on in season 5 might their friendship dating have blossomed into something more serious?

I'm pretty sure it was meant to be self-contained. This was Harper's last episode as a series regular, so I'm sure they knew at this point that she would be leaving for her own spin-off.
