Well she didn't sleep with all those guys. Good for her, she was single and got hers haha. She was ahead of her time!

She does mention in one of the episodes, I think the one when she was debating dating Lou, how many men she has dated -- the good and really bad ones. And no, I don't think she slept around -- at least not much .

reply

It would have been to hard for her to sleep around with Rhoda walking in and out every other minute of the day...

Ahhh, unless most of those dates were with Rhoda...

Many of those 2000 dates were with serious boyfriends: Dan, Joe, etc. She obviously had more than a few dates with them.

I was always impressed that Mary could go to a convention -- Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, and she'd immediately have a date for that evening. And of course when she was in Chicago with Sue Ann -- those two guys liked Mary and didn't like Sue Ann because she tries too hard.

Mary must have dated every eligible man in the Twin Cities!

reply

Especially after Mary and Rhoda broke up in 1974.

Mary was a virgin

I seriously doubt if Mary had sex on all 2,000 dates.

Where did you get the figure 2,000 dates from???

It was the season 7 episode where Georgette suggests she date Lou Grant. Her date comes in for coffee and he immediately starts undressing, thinking they were going to "do it." She gets enraged and tells him to put his shirt back on. He comments that she doesn't have much experience, to which she gives her "mathematical formula" on her dating life: She's 37, has been dating since she was 17, goes out an average of two dates a week, and then becomes ill when she realizes that this comes out to over 2000 dates.

There was an earlier episode (season 3 maybe?) where Mary's parents are visiting her. Mary's mother (Nanette Fabray) is leaving and says out loud, "Don't forget to take your pill." (She was talking to the father about his heart medication.) Both Mary and her father reply, "I won't." Mary realizes her gaffe as her mother stares at her. I thought that was a bit racy for MTM!

That line in "You've Got a Friend" was one of the funniest of the series.

Was Mary a slut? Unfortunately, no. Much of the series, especially early on when she was talking with Rhoda, poked fun at how prudish she was.

reply

they only ever implied that she slept with that guy Joe. and we're probably supposed to assume dan too

nobody else was shown as being intimate with her, there were only vague allusions to it, like she was on the pill

it's funny, as the seasons go on, you can tell when the censors are relaxing about sex, by season 6 and 7 they could mention it, but i just don't think they wanted to imply that mary had sex unless she was in love and serious about somebody. she wasn't "that kind of girl," lol. now that would have been interesting, to show that back then and have it not be a big deal

i think they did it more on dramas, but with sitcoms they didn't want their leading ladies to have casual sex if they were single. i think that finally changed in the 80's (i know people had sex on shows like cheers, for example)

But 2000 dates!

reply

Only if she charged money, and she didn't. And she didn't sleep with all of her dates.

Therefore, no, she wasn't.

Why on Earth would you even ask that question, and in such a crude way?

reply

Crudeness isn't permitted on IMDb?

Besides, a whore charges, a slut not necessarily.

It's hard picturing Mary as either, though.
