Question about the last episode

Ted refers to Sue Ann as a News hen during his on air tribute , Is this an actual title/word?

reply

I could be wrong, but I think Ted identifies her in his televised farewell to the departing staff as "News Hints' Sue Ann Nivens."

There is an earlier episode ("Sue Ann Gets The Ax") where Sue Ann loses her own show and begs Lou to give her a job on the news staff. I don't think we ever see what kind of job she is given, but the final episode seems to imply that she's been given a segment on the show called "News Hints." I assume the title was intended to suggest a segment about "Household Hints," which was Sue Ann's forte in earlier episodes.

Did they make any reference to what Lou, Mary, and Murray were going to do for a job? I know Lou eventually became a newspaper editor in the show Lou Grant and as far as I know we're left to wonder what they were going to do for jobs.

A lot of shows - most shows these days - would wrap up the show in a neat package and we the viewers would know what was going to happen to the characters after they left WJM. That's not what happened in the final episode. I found it surprising.

Well, we ultimately found out what happened to Mary and Rhoda in the 2000 TV movie "Mary and Rhoda."

Mary apparently moved to New York and married a Congressman, who subsequently died in a rock climbing accident shortly before the time period of the movie. Rhoda had been living in Paris, but then divorced her French husband before returning to New York to work as a professional photographer.

Oddly, they never discussed any of the other MTM characters in the course of the TV movie.

Since the film felt like it was taking place in an alternate universe, I just regard it as that.

Thanks, ElRaisuli! I had completely forgotten about that movie. Perhaps on purpose...?

They were also mothers of college-age daughters.
Something that I cannot grasp regarding either character.
