Mary's gone. Mary lives forever. Favorite Mary episodes

Today Jan 25 2017 Mary Tyler Moore passed away after a long illness. She was 80 years old and had been fighting diabetes since her early 30s.
Her legacy in television history is second to none.

In looking back on the Mary Tyler Moore show, the show that came as close as any to perfection, what are your favorite Mary episodes.

Toulouse LaTrec is one of my favorite Artists".one of the best shows of the first season, Mary is torn by her reaction to her dates shortness, she realizes she's a height bigot. It also features Murray filling in for Ted, toupee and all. Ed-"Keep up the fair work Murray."
best scene Erik is explaining his theory of life to Rhoda how in high school there is this one guy who is captain of the football team and who is going with the girl who is head cheerleader and voted most popular." while listening to this Mary's head is sinking, " Now these two people are deliriously happy, in every high school in the country there are two happy people and everybody else is miserable."of course Mary sees herself as one of the 2 happy kids from high school and has to win her friends back to her side, which isn't too hard. In the episode Mary comes to the realization that you can have male friends, without it being romantic, you can just like somebody. Erik is like a male Rhoda one of the members of her tribe.

Rhoda and her Mom, Rhoda won't see her Mom and Mary kind of has to adopt her, classic Mary she always wants things to work out for everybody. Great ending with Mary pretending to be a mannequin in the store window

i guess i am going to like anything from the first couple of seasons, Mary is so spunky and adorable in these episodes, she would become a little more serious and world experienced in the later episodes, but they were great too.

i don't know all the titles but here are some off the top of my head
The Snowstorm that strands everyone and put Mary in charge of election day coverage.

The Christsmas episode where Mary thinks she is alone on Christsmas and the gang comes back to be with her at the end

The episode where they decide to do the News show from the newsroom, and Mary has to deal with a drunk would be boyfriend ( played by Dick Van Dykes brother)

The Pilot epidoe-I hate spunk

Chuckles the Clown episode

so many. All great.

My two very very faves are: When nothing went right for her when she had a cold and had to go to an awards show; and also the guy who pestered her all the time wanting to date her and then she threw a fit in the restaurant and wrote "no" in the cake with her finger.

Every time i get a cold i think of that episode, with Mary and her hair, and the line, "My colds are always the same, 3 days coming, 3 days with me, 3 days going." The usual spunky upbeat Mary laid low by a common cold.

I don't know, but something about reading that just now hit me as very, very funny. Awwww.... Mary is so sweet and so good, but sometimes she doesn't know what to do. All this kind of reminds me of the episode "Best of Enemies", when Mary is feeling very low about the break with Rhoda (which really does qualify, I think, as a good reason for feeling so down), and so Mr. Grant comes over to her place for dinner. Then, poor Mary says something like "Why do all of my problems seem like little problems to everyone else? Whenever I get a cold, someone will come up to me and say "oh don't you look cute with that little red nose!" or you know if someone says they're gaining weight, they'll get great tips about dieting and things... if I say I'm gaining weight, they say "GOOD!" 🙌 ...Lol. Do you know what it's like to have these dumb, cute, funny, little problems, Mr. Grant?"

Bless her heart. Mary was a good soul and if push came to shove, you just knew she would come through for her friends, but life had not really tested her all that much. She had kind of a charmed life.

I loved the Veal Prince Orloff episode.

Sue Ann volunteers to prepare a gourmet dinner for Mary's elegant dinner party.

Anything that could go wrong, did go wrong, an extra dinner guest("Mare, he just got fired from Hempel's", Sue Ann timing dinner to the millisecond and only 3of the 6 invited guests were there ("dinner is ready in 2 minutes!"), and not enough food ("Mr Grant, there are exactly 6 servings of the Veal, no more, no less. You took half! Mr Grant, you have to put some back!". "You know, what, I'm not hungry as I thought I was.")

Great writers, great actors.

"Chuckles the Clown", and the series finale. That was the first show I can remember actually having a final episode.
RIP Mary. We grew up with you, and loved you!

The Lars Affair and all the dinner party episodes. Loved them all though!

I'm glad this came up again . I am a huge fan going back to when it was CBS Saturday with "the line-up" : The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Bob Newhart Show & the Carol Burnett Show (Saturdays got even BETTER when SNL debuted in 1975!) .
I love some of the "classic" episodes and I also HATE some of the classic episodes . Well in my overbearing opinion here are some of my thoughts:
The NUMBER ONE EPISODE that does not get enough love: S4, Ep20
Better Late... That's a Pun... Than Never
( I call it: The Obituary Episode)
Working into the early morning, and delirious, Mary and Rhoda take some artistic liberties updating WJM's obituaries, and, when one of them is read on the air, there are serious consequences for Mary.

Seriously well crafted story here!( And a very original plot that could almost be a Seinfeld sub-plot!) A joke that goes too far. The plot has some nice twists (Mary had no idea that Lou would take this so seriously -- but he did. Murray gives Mary a pep-talk into fighting back --and she does. The acting on Mary's part during the scene in the office is brilliant -- on the verge of tears and all. The episode is also very funny too (although it does get slightly serious at certain points).
The main reason I LOVE THIS EPISODE is because when I was younger -- many of my practical jokes backfired and got me in HUGE trouble as a youngster and teenager.
----------------------------------------------
I like the "Chuckles Death" episode even though Mary looks horrible in this one. It's almost distracting-- hated that shorty short hairdo. Good episode -- nice dose of "black humor" handled perfectly. I approve! Somewhat over-rated -- but just a little bit .
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
These episodes (that EVERYONE seems to love) ...I hate:

Mary's issue with sleeping pills. A "very special Mary". Ugh. Just not funny,. Bathroom scene. Not funny. Too much "drama" -- save it for The Golden Girls.

Mary Dates Lou. Unfunny. Dull. Predictable . I have NO IDEA why this is a "fan favorite".

Other fan favorites I LOVE:
Lou's first date . The Dinner Party. The Last episode. The Lars Affair.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Ones that I used to LOVE - now not so much. Mary's 3 Husbands (fantasy episode) and Ted and Georgettes Wedding.

I am not a huge fan of Ted-centric episodes *except* for Ted Baxter
s Famous Broadcasters School and Farmer Ted and the News.

Mary looks so sexy in the Ted fantasy , she really flashes that smile and legs and everything.

My favorite: The Two Mrs. Dudleys. Mary has to find Lou a date for the Teddy Awards. Rhoda recommends her gym partner, a widow. Mary calls and invites her....only the woman answering is the gym partner's mother-in-law! The MIL shows up and is 90 years old!

Was this shown at the marathon this past weekend?

reply

I think my favorite may be the final scene of "Ted Baxter's Famous Broadcasting School."

SOLE STUDENT: "What's the passing grade for this course?"
TED: "The passing grade- Lou, you want to 'field' that one?"
LOU:[slowly rising and stepping forward on the stage] "We'll probably go... by a class average."

reply

When Mary and Ted had a creative writing class together and somehow Mary got frustrated and quit, or maybe the class ended or Ted made fun of her writing, so she quit, I'm not sure. And there weren't even VCRs back then to re-watch it again. Then on a TV news broadcast Ted had to stretch out the news to fit the time slot and he started replaying a story "he had wrote" off the top of his head and the story (which did not make sense at all) consisted bits and pieces of Mary's stories and Mary was livid. The others were, "Well, that's Ted."

The reason Mary got upset with Ted @ the creative writing class was after Ted PLAGIARIZED her story. He read HER STORY in front of the class.
