Question about the end [spoiler]

At the end, Monica Ranieri (Eva Renzi) almost manages to kill Dalmas (Musante). But the cops arrive just in time to stop her. And I wonder : "How ?" and so does Dalmas : "How did you find out ?" ; Morosini (Salerno) answers : "Julia".

But as Julia is all tied up behind the couch (where she could have made noise to alert Dalmas but hasn't - I don't know why) and nobody knows where Dalmas and all the gang went after Alberto Ranieri's death, I don't see how it's possible ?

Any clues ?

reply

The phone had been knocked to the floor near where Julia was laying, tied up and gagged. You see her trying to wriggle her way to the receiver. Presumably she managed to at least get the gag off and called the police.

I read Fredric Brown's THE SCREAMING MIMI years ago as I did almost all of his novels and was surprised to find it listed as the source material for this film. I saw the film version on TCM a few years ago, and it wasn't worth watching. Phil Carey, Anita Ekberg and Gypsy Rose Lee who should've written her own material.

I don't think many of Brown's books were ever filmed although STAR TREK'S "THE ARENA" seems to have been inspired by one of his sci-fi short stories. One book I remember in particular THE MURDERER used the same plot device as STRANGERS ON A TRAIN.

Nothing about this movie makes any sense.

While I agree it is possible for her to have gotten lose, I think you have to see the point of the film is for the protagonist/voyeur of the film to live, and be scared from his vicarious exposure to violence to show the audience that they are affected by what they have seen. It is more a psychological ploy that a straight narrative ending/film as is the case with most argento films.

Based on the handful I've seen to date, most "giallo" films are rather convoluted and don't make too much sense (some more so than others). BUT, as a fan, that's one of the many aspects of the genre that I enjoy. Basically I tend to look at them a certain way: "If certain things didn't happen a certain way, there wouldn't be a movie". Don't ask why too much and just enjoy! Who cares if it isn't logical.
