How is this not Argento's best work!?

Sure, SURPIRIA will always be the go-to Argento because of the GOBLINS score, and that first stained-glass kill that forever makes "ALL TIME BEST KILLS" lists.

But I don't understand how DEEP RED so often takes the first or second spot on Argento lists... I though this one was outstanding. One of the few of his that a modern audience can still watch without laughing all the way through it. Believeable characters and dialogue, kills that are violent, but not ridiculously gory or brutal beyond reality, music that is appropriate to the scenes and doesn't make you cringe, and a tight and thrilling plot.... I think Arento started at the top of a mountain, and his entire career has been a slow descent since...

I think this would easily be considered his best if not for Deep Red, Tenebre, and Opera.

Then again, I think Suspiria is pretty lame aside from the oversaturated colors and the opening kill. It's not as boring as Inferno but it's just too... "horror", with the witches and shyt... I like his thriller films. The films I just mentioned have an atmosphere and style that bests this film imo.

I'll always think Suspiria is his best film mainly because everything gelled so well and it was effective on a visceral level that it ranks up there with one of the most unique cinema experiences you will most likely ever have, but it is nice to take a break from that craziness and watch his Animal Trilogy films which are much more leisurely and not as frenetic.

I saw BirdWTCPlummage when it premiered in the 70s. It was Great. It terrified & haunted me for years. When it came to netflix in 2010, I revisited this film. The magic was gone. It felt dated. :(
The actors were still terrific... :)

This doesn't reach the magnitude of Suspiria. There were a few thrilling moments but they were not constant whereas Suspiria had an eerie atmosphere throughout.

I've always liked 'Bird' and 'Deep Red' the best of all Argento's films. Why?

They're just plain mysteries (and I mean that in a good way). I saw 'Suspiria' upon release in NYC, and the audience screamed at the appropriate times, but once I realized it involved the supernatural, I lost interest. I'm just not interested in things supernatural.

He made other 'whodunits?' or mysteries, of course, but to me nothing could top those two.

I love this film for some of the reasons you mentioned plus it had an amazing twist that I did not see coming. Usually I can guess the killer so easily.

However it's still not my favorite, maybe because the first Argento films I saw and fell in love with were Suspiria and Deep Red. I also put Tenebre, Phenomena, Opera and maybe Inferno (love it but didn't enjoy it as much last time) above this one. Still makes my top ten at least.
