I was wondering if there was any talk of a Hollywood remake of this film, or if that other version by the other italian director was ever released?
Although, I would love see the story updated for modern times, I would hate to think what Hollywood would do with the plotline, since they have a habit of de-gaying historical epics like Troy and Alexander, both of which shared gay love plots, that were hacked to bits by the directors and screenwriters. Also who would you love to see cast in the main roles? Personally, I would love to see a Heath Ledger/Orlando Bloom or Heath Ledger/Jake Gyllenhall pairing again, since he has worked with both in the past, but only if the story was true to the historical records of the time.
I haven't seen any Hollywood film being as brave and unapologetic as Satyricon. I do believe, however, that Greenaway's The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover and 8½ Women are English languages films that have been very strongly influenced by it. They are certainly worth checking out if you haven't done so already.
On the other hand, if you're talking about adapting the original book -- I guess that is possible, but of, course, a Hollywood adaptation would most definitely not be plotless and freewheeling like Fellini's masterpiece.
only if the story was true to the historical records of the time
I guess you were not happy with what Fellini did in this film, then?
Because Fellini avoided doing precisely that -- instead, he created something of a Science Fiction film set in the past. (He called it Science Fiction, by the way.) A film that exists in a completely different and unrealistic world -- a fantastic world that exists only in dreams and imagination. The point was "historical records" aren't to be trusted, and that fantasy is more interesting and sincere than unreliable "facts".
Anyway, I really don't know if you're being serious or are just kidding -- your post seems like exactly the opposite of what an admirer of this film would submit.
Actually, I do want to see a remake, not because I didn't like the Felini version, but I do like to see how stories are adapted and shaped my newer generations. Even if it was a brilliant masterpiece, which I can't say it is in my opinion, though its still great, I'd still like to see a remake happen, even if its just to say how bad it is compared to a classic.
Stangely enough, I've always thought that the Cirque du Soleil presentations at their core were heavily influenced by Satyricon. The beautiful, the fantastic, earth's elements - earth, air, wind and fire, international tones and perceptions, nature in all it's darkness and light, the variable shadings of the human condition; it's all there in Cirque du Soleil's wonderful presentations.
I would love to see Cirque du Soleil create a show "under the influence" of Satyricon. Ten to one they would do an incredible job.
