in "kubrick" by michel ciment, the man puts "Il Vitelloni" as 1st in his top 10 of all time (Citizen Kane and Wild Strawberries are there too... I'd post the whole thing but I'm too lazy to go pick up the book lol).
ok here we go... 1 - Il Vitelloni (Fellini, 1953) 2 - Wild Strawberries (Bergman, 1958) 3 - Citizen Kane (Welles, 1941) 4 - The treasure of sierra madre (Huston, 1948) 5 - City Lights (Chaplin, 1931) 6 - Henry V (Olivier, 1945) 7 - La Notte (Antonioni, 1961) 8 - The Bank Dick (Fields, 1940) 9 - Roxie Hart (Wellman, 1942) 10 - Hell's Angels (Hughes, 1930)
Very interesting. I've seen about 2/3 of Fellini's work, but never "I Vitelloni," which is not one of FF's most widely acclaimed films. But if Kubrick ranked it that high, there must be something to it, so I'll make it a point to try to rent or buy a copy.
Apparently, while in pre-production for "The Shining",Kubrick was pretty high on Lynch's "Eraserhead",and would invite friends over for midnight screenings.
