Horace Tabor's glasses!

In the scene where Ben nearly kills Horace Tabor by throwing a knife at his head, Horace then reacts angrily (go figure) and takes off his glasses , BREAKS them, and throws them on the ground, while demanding that they hold a town meeting.

Okay, they're in the middle the wilderness - no doctors, no mail service, certainly no optometrist! I could see Horace grabbing the knife that nearly killed him out of the tree trunk and throwing it disgustedly into the creek, but...come on! He just destroyed HIS OWN GLASSES to show how angry he was.

Was this something that the civilized greenhorns back East used to do to show they were angry - destroy their own prosthetics???
