Movie it Could Have Been
The first showing of what was to become Paint Your Wagon happened in downtown Portland..and it showed the movie AS FILMED in Oregon, before post-production in LA No professional singers...the chorus WAS the hippy extras. A maximum of HUGE shots of the wilderness contrasted with the funky closeness of No Name City. Everything was MUCH real-er than the final product. The location people were FREAKY about authenticity..the sets were amazing; actually lived in for the duration, full of antiques. The hippies were hired because they had real long hair, moustaches and beards, and looked the part from the get go, had their own boots and period firearms. The costumes were from the Silent era, broken out of the movie warehouses. Extras wore Rudolph Valentino's shirts! The French whores WERE French whores, who continued to ply their trade throughout the filming. I would LOVE to see THAT film again.
