Oregon.

It was filmed in Baker City, Oregon. The museum in Baker has a wonderful scale model of No-Name City and lots of film memorabilia.

baker sux....

So do you.

I'd much rather live in Baker City or La Grande than here in the Portland area (that is, if I could find work in Baker City, that's another story).

reply

why would some one want to live in baker... thats just weird....

Baker City is a nice, quiet, small town. Pretty low crime rate. You can walk at night and not feel like you're going to get mugged. I would live there if I could find work.

I lived in both Baker City and LaGrande and trust me-- they are only nice places to visit not live.

fluffychickens suck,
From the Baker High Class of '89!

PS Clint Eastwood played golf with my Junior year Social Studies teacher when they were making the film.
And I've seen that model a million times.

My parents drank at the local watering hole with Lee Marvin and others from this movie.

The site of the filming was actually East Eagle Creek in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, about sixty miles from Baker. The shooting location was not Baker itself.

The headquarters were in Baker City, in sparsely populated but beautiful Northeast Oregon. Almost all of Paint Your Wagon was filmed in the nearby Wallowa-Whitman National Forest on the edge of the Eagle Cap wilderness. Getting to the location involved driving on gravel Forest Service roads.

The filming location is "just plain lovely." How they found it I will never know. I visit every now and then.

Here is a video of the location, now:

The "locations" site here says it was filmed in Big Bear CA as well as Baker, OR.

reply

The shots from the air of the wagon train at the beginning and the end were filmed near big bear lake. The close up shots of the individual characters at the end of the film were filmed outside of Baker City, OR.
