Wanna give that doodlebug a workout?

The scene where Herbie drag races with the convertible has to be the coolest scene in movie history. Not only are the couple in the car seriously funky (groovy pop, groo-vy), but the POV shot from the convertible of Herbie racing down the street is amazingly realistic. The speed looks so violent it used to scare me a little as a child. Any thoughts?

Yeah, here's a thought: In "Herbie Rides Again" it's VERY OBVIOUS the moving car scenes are all shot with back-projection. I haven't seen this movie since its release (and I was, let's see, 8 at the time!!), so I couldn't give an authoritative opinion, but I'd venture to suggest it's probably not all THAT realistic!

reply

Actually the shot I think he is talking is one that wasn't shot in front of a screen but on the actual street. And it probably was shot at speed, because they did build a specialized car for the fast scenes. It was set up with a Posche engine and shocks, pretty bad-a$$ car actually.

Yeah!!!
Give some credit to the public schools.

I would've love to live in the 60's just because of herbie, whoa.

Oh me too!!

Did you know the girl from that scene is the original voice of Velma from Scooby Doo?

Actually, I know the guy who owns the original Porsche powered Herbie today in Florida, referred to by the prop department as #2 (there were 8 cars used in the movie). It was not the car used for that particular scene but rather car #1 which had a modified-by-EMPI Volkswagen engine in it. The film was in fact sped up, but done so well that it's hard to tell.

reply

Dean Jones owns the Herbie that does the tricks.

Err, I wouldn't say that the frameskip isn't not noticeable... but for the time period, a high speed camera with high speed film would be prohibitively expensive. (In fact, they may even be using such a camera, I don't know... but the faster the film the more you can skip frames without notice.)

I will say that CGI has come a long way, but just because it is dirt cheap to make a CGI scene and your average (stupid) moviegoer won't actually appreciate the difference in quality... the special effects departments really were where movies shined and coming up with ways to get all those kookie scenes to work is part of the magic.

That was a great scene. I love this movie and all of the sequels sucked. They should have let it go after this one.

Thats how most VW's are "customed up" today for customers, lol (try saying that 5 times fast!). Porsche 911 tires for example, also fits onto a VW Beetle brake wheels so they're interchangable somewhat with a tuck here and there.

NO

Otherwise we wouldn't have gotten 'Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo' out of the sequels, and that one's quite worthy of being the love bug's follow up, even though its the 3rd movie really. Ironically the sequels were done by the same directors? 'The Love Bug' and 'Herbie Rides Again' by Robert Stevenson and 'Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo' and 'Herbie Goes Bananas by Vincent McEveety. both did excellent first films in the series but did more outragous, comedic and goofier sequels to their first Herbie related movies.

Herbie: Fully Loaded by Angela Robinson, i don't like nor consider a real Herbie movie with Lindsey Lohan behind his steering wheel ('ugh').

And pass up the cool 'Monte Carlo' design of Herbie?, not a chance!

Best Herbie films in order...

1) The Love Bug (5 stars *****)

2) Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo (5 stars *****)

3) Herbie Goes Bananas (3 stars ***)

4) Herbie Rides Again (2 stars **)

(Herbie: Fully Loaded ["Not even rated"])

Disney in the 60's did NOT have a handle on portraying "Hippies".. "coupla wierdos Guiniviere!" they were comical in their level of cheesiness... but this is still one of my ALL TIME favourite movies..

reply

I love that scene too. The 'Hippie' is actually Dean Jones..

reply

Did you notice, that is Dean Jones in a wig and fake beard saying "coupla wierdos Guiniviere!"

reply

"Groovy pop! Grooooo-veee!" is one of the funniest lines in film. The first time I watched this movie, I rewound the VHS so my girlfriend could hear "Groovy pop. Groovy". She thought it was hilarious too! We borow that line to get a laugh from each other. (The DOODLEBUG line is funny too!)
