The Price of Coal

I suggest that people who like the film Kes watch Ken Loach's 1977 film The Price of Coal, which was also based on a Barry Hines novel. Whereas Kes has become a British cult classic, The Price of Coal has become obscure. It's not a happy film but it's a good one. In addition, the whole film is in good Yorkshire dialect.

Indeed, an excellent production, but remember, it is in two parts and the first part, the preparations for the royal visit is very funny. The second part, the explosion is not funny. This is based on the Houghton Main disaster, 1975. I worked at Houghton Main and my uncle was one of the men killed. A very sad occasion.

I didn't know about the Houghton Main disaster. That sounds terrible.

I had wondered whether it was based on the Lofthouse disaster of 1973. My grandad worked at Lofthouse, but he'd already packed in by then.

I think that it's a film due a revival.

Yorkshire Post article about the disaster here: http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/community/nostalgia/the-human-price-paid-for-nation-s-coal-1-6505238

and the HSE report: http://www.dmm.org.uk/ukreport/y1975-03.htm

A disaster that should never have happened if everyone had been doing their jobs properly.
