Nobody realises DVD version is dubbed!

Am i the only person what gets wound up that you cant get the original version of Kes' anywhere anymore?? Nobody else seems to even realise this. I taped it off the telly in the early 80s when we first got a video recoder when i was a kid and i used to watch it over and over again. The tape got lost and years later i bought it on video and then DVD but it was dubbed. Different voices. The accents are not as strong. It spoils the whole film for me but it seems that nobody else has actualy seen the original because nobody seems to know this!!!

The Criterion Collection edition released in the US a few years back has both the original and dubbed versions to choose from. Picture quality is also a significant upgrade compared to the older releases, and it is available in Blu-Ray format too. Keep in mind however, that these releases are region locked, so make sure you have a region free player before you commit to purchasing one of these.

I've seen the criterion one online (I think it was Youtube) but it still has the "how does it lay It's eggs?" bit missing. I have a copy with the original soundtrack complete and unedited. It was recorded from tv during the miners strike (look at the BBC2 logo before it starts!). I remember watching it at the time. It was shown again in its full glory around '86 but never saw the original again. Many thanks to the imdb member who sent me a copy. If anybody want one the quality is superb.

I listened to the original undubbed version (Criterion edition) yesterday for the first time.

I agree with you 100%! It is so much better than the dubbed version. The voice tones are so more realistic as well! Great!

What interests me is when they decided to re-dub the film. My mother taped Kes off Channel 4 on VHS back around 1994-95, (she had a similar upbringing and wanted myself to know what it was like in those days) ... and that was also the re-dubbed version. I guess it must have been the late 80s/early 90s when they made that decision, so that foreigners/Americans can understand the dialogue better.

Not sure what version I saw, but it wasn't dubbed. Did they really overdub to make the accents more audible?
