Criterion Edition

This DVD did not offer subtitles which I sorely could have used. It does have two sound choices neither of which helped me understand even half of what was being said (I am an Ohioan). For me it was like watching Pather Panchali without subtitles - its greatness would elude me. I persevered with Kes until the end when I simply could not understand what Billy did to Jud that made Jud so upset and vengeful. Could someone who understands the dialect please summarize this for me.

Billy was left a note to place a bet on two horses. Billy asked someone who often gambled what he thought would happen and he was told that he didn't think they would win so he spent the money instead. HUD went to Billy's school to beat him up for not placing the bet because they both won. When he could not find Billy he went back to let the bird go but it kept scratching him with its claws so he said, "What else could I do?". The odds on the bet were 100/6 and 4/1 he was to put 5 shillings on and Jud should have won 16 pounds (one weeks wages) for Jud.

If Billy had lost me 16 quid, I'd have killed his bloody bird as well. Little twat!
