Weird Piece of Direction
I recently purchased the Blu Ray of HD after many years not seeing it (I never owned the
DVD, although I'm not sure why). I have fallen in love with this film all over again, and
had forgotten how much I truly adore everyone it (E.J. Peaker is so cute - almost like a
blonde Marlo Thomas, and I was reminded how funny Matthau is). Just solid gold
entertainment.
That said, I noticed on a recent viewing a piece of writing and/or direction that makes zero
sense. When Dolly hands Cornelius the card showing the name and address of Irene
Malloy, she takes the card back(???) and tells him something like, "Now that you've
committed her name to memory..." Huh? Dolly GIVES hundreds of strangers various
cards, why would she take Irene's card back? I know this is a musical comedy and
realism has nothing to do with the scheme of things here, but there is no motivation I
can think of to write/direct Dolly taking it back.
Any thoughts?
