Alternate 'takes' in the dvd version

I grew up watching DOLLY on tv, and then VHS. When I happily bought my dvd version, I noticed two things right off: Alternate shots were used on the dvd print that are not in the tv/VHS print:

When Streisand is sing "Parade" and starts to run towards the camera, she holds on to her hat in the VHS / tv version. She does not do this on the dvd.

Then, in the DOLLY number, when the waiters sing "I feel the room swaying/cause the band's playing..." with Streisand in the middle of the frame - on the tv/VHS print she kind of glances around and smiles with a pleased expression. She doesn't on the dvd.

Everything else looks exactly the same. Why would Fox go to the trouble of substituting two different scenes? Any thoughts?

I had to watch the DVD again to pay attention to the things you mentioned, and you're dead on. However, this is the same version they've played on AMC since at least 1996, that I know of, so here's my theory:

I think it's possible that Fox released two different prints of this film during it's initial release in 1969. One print was used for the Pan-N-Scan VHS, and another was used for the widescreen DVD.

Another possibility is that when Fox decided to make the transfer to DVD, these alternate takes were in the best shape for the restoration, and thus were used. I say restoration, because you have to admit, the color on the DVD is better, and the picture more clearer than either the VHS or the LaserDisc versions.

Just my 2 cents. If I'm wrong, cool. If anyone knows the "true" reasons, I would love to see them!

You're right. The video and recent DVD release were struck from two different sources. It's discussed in this link -

Thanks to you both, Silver Creed and Murph24!

When you watch a movie and are so familiar with it for years, you suddenly notice changes like that.
