70mm Prints
Does anyone know how good the 70mm prints are that get shown from these movies?
shareActually there is a recent NEW print of DOLLY making it's way through the big city revival theatres. I think it played last week at the Castro in Frisco. However that print was an older, faded one.
shareDoes anyone know how to find out the names and locations of the revival houses that are showing films like "Dolly!", and "Doctor Dolittle" in 70mm? I live pretty close to NYC, and I'm having a heck of a time finding out locations...they seem to be all in Europe or LA. Help!!!!
shareAFI Silver Theater in Silver Spring, MD, is advertising a 70mm print of DOLLY! this weekend (Jan. 14-16, 2006) as part of their tribute to Ernest Lehman.
This afternoon, I saw the first of the three 70mm showings of Hello, Dolly! that the AFI Silver has scheduled for this long weekend (the remaining two are on Sunday, January 15 at 1:00, and Monday, January 16 at 8:30). The print they showed was virtually flawless: not the slightest scratch, perfect colors, and that special crispness that you generally see only in films that are both shot in 65mm and exhibited in 70mm. The multitrack stereo sound, although marred by that slight deficiency in the upper frequencies that seems to have characterized all or virtually all Hollywood stereo soundtracks created prior to the Dolby revolution of the mid seventies, is, other than that, wonderfully clean and full.
I'd urge anyone who cares about Hello, Dolly! and/or about 70mm film exhibition, and who can make it to one of these showings, to do so!
