On Playing Cornelius Hackl

Hello everyone I have been cast in my high school's production of Hello, Dolly!
as Cornelius Hackl I was wondering if some of the big fnas of the show and movie could give me some tips on how to play this part well Its is really nerve racking being the only freshman cast in a lead while the other leads are being played by seniors.

he is a big dreamer and kind of cheesy.

He dreams of be being kissed by a girl and adventures in New york.

Cornelius is a very sweet, but obviously very naive and sheltered young man. Get in touch with your inner child because Cornelius reminds me of a kid in a candy store when he meets Ms. Malloy. Hope that helps a little.

I played Cornelius in the play on which "Hello, Dolly!" is based, "The Matchmaker." He is a really great part, I've been in about 12 shows, but I can safely say that he was my favorite role, so have a lot of fun with it! I think the important thing about Cornelius is playing him honestly, meaning not playing for laughs. Much as I like Michael Crawford, I think he was overly goofy(going for laughs)in the role, which kind of served as a model for how NOT to play him for me. And what the last person said about a "kid in a candy store" when he meets Mrs. Molloy is a really good analogy. Congrats, and have a good time with the role, it's a great one!

I feel that Cornelius is a leader between him and Barnaby. He wants to improve his status in life, which Vandergelder is preventing him from doing. All Vandergelder does is promote him from chief clerk to chief clerk. He is the one who was willing to take the risk into going to NY and running into Vandergelder.

Please don't play it like Michael Crawford. If the Razzies had existed in 1969, he would have been a shoe-in.

Any other way has to be better!
