Marianne McAndrew / Irene Molloy.....

I'm not familiar with any of Ms. McAndrew's other work, and she was fine in the part.

But, I'm always a little put-off that she looks and acts like a mature 40-year-old, when paired with the 28-year-old (and 14 year-old acting) Cornelius Hackl character. She was attractive, but it just didn't look like a realistic match to me. I found it distracting.

Did anyone else get that impression?

I guess we have to suspend disbelief -- if we're asked to accept Streisand and Matthau as a couple. Never could quite see that one either.

I thought she was lovely and apparently so did Gene Kelly,I read, which is why she got the part though I do agree with you about the pairing. To be fair to Miss McAndrews,I think that anyone would have looked older and fuller figured next to the then boyish and gangly Mr.Crawford.
Thanks for the response. I didn't mean that Ms. McAndrews looked older and "full figured," or unattractive in any way. I mean that her demeanor was more sedate and mature -- and this was reflected in her face. I have trouble seeing her being attracted to the awkward Hackl character. She seemed to have more "class" than that. If she were sillier (like the Minnie Fay character), I wouldn't have noticed the disparity.

By the way, according to this thread, McAndrews claims her voice was dubbed:

I don't believe it, but Crawford is actually a year older than her.

Yes! I actually looked up her age while I was watching it because I thought it was such an odd match. Cornelius says he is 28 (I think) and Miss Molloy seems so much more mature. I didn't dislike it or anything, but I was taken somewhat by surprise when he declares his love for her. I just didn't see them as a match, even though I guess it was fairly obvious. I thought the other couple, Barnaby and Minnie, were going to be the ones to declare their love for each other.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if her voice was dubbed. I noticed at one point after she was singing that her speaking voice sounded nothing like her singing voice.

Tomorrow's just your future yesterday!

No matter which Version I have seen I have fallen in love with Irene Molloy well the actress who has played her. I just have never been lucky to play Cornelius on stage. :(

There is more Gravy about you then the Grave. Scrooge.
