Michael Winner's only decent film moreover because of the writing rather than his sixties-style direction and-i'm sorry, Michael J Pollard is so annoying, I want his character to die but then again, the character is the foil for Reed's brilliantly sensitive performance so Pollard essayed the role well...Oliver Reed was/is grossly underrated as an actor (overshadowed by tabloid trivia) and seeing this makes his talent much missed

I agree with your point on Pollard and have edited my original post so that it is not misundrestood that my dislike was for the character and not the actor's portryal of him which was therefore well done
An optimistic ending is justified as the futility of war is well captured in many scenes in the film
If you want sadness then watch Bernard Wicki's The Bridge ...
"The Games" (1970) directed by Michael Winner was a pretty good film, but it's hardly ever shown on tv nowadays and few people know it. I think if you see it you'll like it.
Surely though you'll agree that Deathwish was a good film. Whatever its faults, it was a film that was crying out to be made in 1973, and if Winner hadn't made it someone else would have.
His remake of The Wicked Lady also has its moments. I'd agree that the "lived happily ever after" line at the end seemed terribly misplaced. It seemed as if the director was forced to put it there to offset his less than glamorous portrayal of the war.
