Wide Screen Format?

Thought for sure the VHS version was a Pan'n'Scan until I went to the store to purchase the DVD.

They only had a Full Screen version of it.

Was that the original format?

The original was shot in Panovision. The DVD has the opening credits in wide screen but then cuts to the mutilated "full frame" format. You can get a hint at the grandeur of the wide screen format from the credits as Forbin activates Collosus. The transition to the claustrophobic full frame is jarring. What a shame. Is there a new release planned?

It was released in widescreen format on Laserdisk, which I have seen. It is vastly superior to the Fullscreen format; there are plenty of panoramic scenes, and scenes where characters are reacting to something on the other part of the screen.

It's a honest shame that the DVD isn't letterboxed. I would love to see a widescreen version of this film.

Widescreen version just popped up online in the proper 2.35:1 ratio. Someone must have made a digital transfer from the laser disc. It's in a Divx format which you can watch on your computer or transfer to DVD files with programs lke Nero.

You can watch it or download it here...
