I have just watched a widescreen version of the The Forbin Project on DVD.It would be great if Universal Pictures released a proper widscreen version. The film has a real cult following and deserves better treatment. I have never seen it in the major retail chains.
Some of the stars like Susan Clark and Eric Braeden are still alive, they could add some commentary.Films of lesser quality have had beter treatment. It would be even better if there was a director's commentary and perhaps ,deleted scenes(!)
Yeah, the director, Joseph Sargent, is still alive, as is Susan Clark and of course Eric Braeden. Hell, even Gordon Pinsent is still around! I don't understand why Universal just threw this out as a pan and scan DVD? They must be nuts? This movie was shot in 1968 and had its released held up for two years, then when it was finally released the studio barely promoted it. It never got the respect it deserved. Well, it should get a special 40th Anniversary edition DVD.
Brian Grazer will produce and Ron Howard may direct a remake of the 1970 sci-fi film Colossus: The Forbin Project. The original was directed by Joseph Sargent and starred Eric Braeden, George Stanford Brown, and Susan Clark.
According to Variety Jason Rothenberg will work on the screenplay. Universal and Imagine Entertainment are hoping to start work on Colossus after Ron Howard directs the Da Vinci Code prequel Angels and Demons.
Colossus is based on the D F Jones novel originally published in 1966. In Jones' novel, Dr Charles Forbin creates the ultimate computer that is not only super powerful but also gains consciousness and wants to rule over humanity. Variety reports the new film will combine elements from Jones' Colossus trilogy - Colossus, The Fall of Colossus, and Colossus and the Crab.

Now if this comes about, then a Special Edition DVD of the original is a sure thing. Let's just hope there are still people alive for a commentary track!
It seems to be a resize of the old laserdisc masters, not to be technical, but if you want to resize this kind of source, you have to do a proper inverse telecine, wich they didnt bother to do. Result: lots of so called "combing artifatsc"
I watched this DVD last night (on a 16:9 TV rather than a monitor), there is absolutely nothing wrong with the image apart the some scratches/cigarette burns here and there, colours are good, anamorphic image is good, sound is good. Purchase without fear. The only thing missing really is a trailer.
