Ron Howard version still a go?

I heard this mentioned earlier, but nothing new since. This could be an excellent "interpretation" (not remake) of the novel or possibly of the trilogy. Anyone with new news please post.

Side note: Someone posted on this film in the "goofs" section that Forbin blows out 2 candles, then blows again at the second candle that is already out and then the light goes out. This is only true if you are watching the Full Screen DVD. In the original widescreen, there are actually 3 candles on the table, 3rd one is not visible in the fullscreen verison. So when he blows the second time, you actually see the 3rd candle go out, making the light change correct. Not a goof at all.

I heard the same, but nothing since.
Anyone got any updates?

This film would be a worthwhile endeavor to remake or re-interpret.

Except that in today's world, you'd need more action and violence to succeed at the box office. After all that is added in, Colossus/Guardian essentially becomes Skynet, which has become all too familiar.

True, if all you do is look at the man-vs-computer side of it, it's Skynet and we're already pretty bored with that concept.

But - if you look at the underlying principals of the original movie: what we think we're willing to give up, a little control for enhanced security, and how that can be abused and the rise of a facist world-state, then it's really a story for now.

It would have to be structured as a chess game, not a roller coaster. Understate, slowly rack up the tension, and keep squeezing the characters as the entire world becomes a claustrophobic trap for humanity.

If Ron Howard doesn't mind making a thriller for adults (a la Frost/Nixon) and not teenagers (Da Vinci Code/Angels & Demons) then I think we could have a winner here.
