My God, the nightmares this movie inspired....

...in me as a little kid. I saw it when i was around 7 or 8 and even seeing it over 20 years later it still freaks the hell out of me...

The voice had to be the most terrifying part of all, that metal voice modulator just added to the utter terror.

Yep!! I know what you mean! I still love it though and would have love to see the other books made to film (not so much Colossus and the Crab, but maybe parts of it). Hopefully with the remake/re image it can be done with as much tension and chilling suspense...and of course the voice. For myself,Demon Seed creeps me out more because it's so much more claustrophobic and Proteus IV seems almost even more malevolent, even though both computers; and not to mention HAL 9000 had "good" intentions. Yeah, the voice of Colossus was chilling! I'm thinking of putting that on my voice mail! :)

What terrified me at that age was the real JFK and the Cuban missile crisis.
If you listen to the president in about the 10 minute mark and what he says..
On the brink, can no longer afford mistakes, machine can do a better job - he really plays up the benefits of this AI. He just didn't believe it himself and didn't let go of the power he thought he had. And this was about the first thing Colossus would have heard too.
I found it interesting when I watched it again to imagine the computer being the president and the president the computer. They basically said and demanded the same things. I think I was just prejudiced towards punched cards :)

Me too. It used to be broadcast fairly regularly on weekends when I was a kid. Terrified all of us. Just watched it again last night and ignoring the obviously dated sound effects etc it's still a very well made film and very chilling.
