Bruce Dern in a dual role?

Next time you check out this movie, take a good look at the scene where Maj. Falconer stops on his white horse to talk to a heavily bandaged officer on foot. Only his eyes, eyebrows, and nose can be seen but just by these there is a strong resemblance to Bruce Dern. Even his voice, which is obscured behind the bandages, resembles a soft spoken Dern. I've checked the credits and there is none given to whoever had this small speaking role which is unusual since some of the prostitutes who had less to say in their one line or two were given credit.

I'm guessing that since this movie was filmed in Yugoslavia, there was a lack of english speaking actors of the American dialect on hand and with bandages to disguise the face, Dern was choosen to fill in for a second role.

That raised eyebrow and forehead while he speaks is a dead giveaway, that's Dernsy alright.

reply

WOW, and I thought I loved this movie..good work fella!

Well, I don't know....but if you are referring to the 'one eared soldier' described in the 'full cast and credits' section, he is not Dern (different actor name there)....I'm not ruling it out because I haven't seen it in a bit. Is that the one you are speaking of, the 1 eared guy?

reply

No, he means the guy with bandages covering the whole lower half of his face. And I too thought it looked and sounded like Dern.

I was just watching the dvd earlier tonight. I always think it's him in that scene and always try to look for similarities between the two.

Yes, he is NOT Dern, his name is 'David Jones', as far as I can tell. He has bandages on his ear, across his face and lower mouth, and he refuses to follow the one-eyed commander, right? His name was never credited until recently, it should be in the full cast listing by now, if it is all correct. He does look like him, sounds a bit like him, but if you listen, there is absolutely no southern accent, something Dern never hides.

reply

I think it's the director Sydney Pollack, but surely NOT Bruce Dern.
