If you look at the opening scene there's lots of sun. The film may have been shot during the spring.
shareHere's what I think, this is just my opinion I could be wrong - but I think they're all in purgatory. There are many hints to the fact they're all dead. Such as the line, some had died two maybe three times. The Indian says, I always knew the war would never end. Lancaster on the the white horse. Plus, the very ending shot has everything (the castle)as it was - and the closing dialogue begins as it opened. If you notice too - none of the squad have the same insignia. So the rose garden bit with it's dialogue is about those who made it out of purgatory and moved on. At least this is how I like to look at it.
