Did the main actors get on well off screen?

I was wondering if the main actors (Jack, Stan, Blakey and Arthur) actually were good friends off screen? I know at the end of the day they were playing characters, but often, in some episodes, they couldn't wait to get away from each other it seems. And the cruelness that Bob, Stephen and Michael endured from the writers in the scripts must have really hurt them deep down. It was either Bob's teeth, Michael's hair or Stephen's appearance.

Anyone agree and have any insight to this?

From what I recall with my foggy memory of the news reports when Bob Grant died, he seemed to distance himself from the rest of the cast, after the series' ended. Reg Varney (I think) has said that he'd tried to keep in touch with Grant, but didn't get very far and lost contact with him. There's no reason that actors in a show should be best friends anyway.
