what happened to the actor who originally played stan's mum

was she too old? It was a great show,very funny.In australia the show was still being repeated on free to air TV until the late 80's and reg varney starred in a play based on the series.It was very big down here.

Also, when Jack rang the bell for the bus to depart the bus stop, what does he say?

Cicely Courtneidge (the original mum) stood in for Doris Hare who was otherwise engaged for the 1st Series.

I liked both actors but cicely was much quieter while doris hare was a true eastender type!

Odd really - Cicely Courtneidge was renowned for her exuberance in the theatre, and her best known song was called 'Vitality'!

Yeah also in answer to your question 'What does Jack say', I can't make it out either! I think it's 'Hold tight please thank you', or 'Any more fares please, thank you'! Have to listen to a recent one I recorded on ITV3!

he says 'hold very tight please' verified by subs on ITV3 :)
someone once said he says 'elvis's agnees'!
